Flooding in Kidlington – What’s Happening and What’s Being Done

Kidlington has experienced recurring flooding due to its location on the River Cherwell floodplain, heavy rainfall events, and aging drainage systems. Surface water drains, sewers, and developments on flood-prone land have all contributed to the problem.

Local authorities and agencies are taking action. Thames Water and Oxfordshire County Council are working on drainage and sewer improvements, and the Parish Council has installed soakaways and drainage channels in key areas like the cemetery. Residents can also apply for county grants to support local flood prevention projects.

Long-term solutions include enhancing natural flood defenses, restoring wetlands, and improving infrastructure through strategic planning policies.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert, sign up for flood warnings, and get involved in community preparedness efforts.

Our OCC Drainage and minor groundworks contractors are now due to be starting drainage cleaning and survey works at Beech Road, Stratfield Road and Laburnum Crescent, Garden City Kidlington on 15th December and should be done by the end of that week. If water levels allow, they will also survey as far as is currently possible the important 450mm culvert draining south from the estate.
