31/08/2004
This is the month of change. Growth of vegetation slows down and seeds are produced. The breeding season is over for most wildlife. There are first signs of preparations for winter.
Swifts demonstrate this clearly. At the beginning of August dozens may be seen swirling round the church tower in screaming pursuits, but all will have left for Africa by the end of the month. They will not return until next May having spent all this time on the wing, travelling, feeding and sleeping.
Our warblers, the Whitethroats, Chiffchaffs, Willow Warblers etc, having completed a very successful breeding season, will linger longer feeding on the plentiful supply of fruit that is in abundance this year. Resident birds will continue to lie low as they get through the moulting period, although Robins will begin their winter song any day now.
More butterflies, moths, dragonflies and damselflies will be on the wing.
