St Mary's Fields

11/02/2010

After 10 years.

AFTER 10 YEARS…..at St Mary’s Fields

In 2000 the Kidlington Parish Council agreed that the fields should be managed as a conservation area with access for walkers.

A five year management scheme was agreed, followed by a second similar scheme.  The grant for the coming year has been reduced.

Previous allocations have been adequate as the major work, based on the schemes, has been achieved by the extraordinary input from volunteers groups. Their understanding of the conservation needs, and their energy and enthusiasm shown has been remarkable.

We have worked hard to keep the fine variety of trees and shrubs while holding back those that dominate. Some new species have been donated by those who enjoy the meadows.

Open areas have been maintained.

Eight successive dawn chorus counts have shown that bird numbers have increased.

Two rare butterflies have been discovered.

A programme of growing wild flowers has begun.

Two aspects have been failures

The possibility of introducing a pond was shown to be difficult as water sinks through the soft subsoil.

The paths have proved unsuitable becoming overgrown by the surrounding vegetation. During wet periods they become flooded.

THE FUTURE

We are working hard to obtain a TOE grant to assist in path improvements. Letters of support would help.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             The The main cutting of the fields in July will be booked, and also the smaller machine will be used to cut round the paths during the summer months.
