Most exciting record was the visit of a family of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers on July 4th. This species has become rare, and it was good to see an adult and two young that clearly must have bred somewhere in or near St Mary’s Fields.
A study of plant life revealed two new species : a single Pyramid Orchid and a Horse Chestnut tree. The latter has obviously been here some time, demonstrating how we need to record plant life more carefully.
On a visit on June 20th Janet Frost noted the following butterflies:
| Common Blue | 1 | Essex Skipper | 1 |
| Gatekeeper | 15 | Green Veined White | 3 |
| Large Skipper | 1 | Meadow Brown | 17 |
| Red Admiral | 1 | Ringlet | 5 |
| Small White | 1 | Speckled Wood | 3 |
Look out for Peacocks, Comma and Brimstones in August
