No butts - no excuses
Cherwell District Council is to step up its anti litter initiative by targeting litter bugs who drop cigarette butts.
On Monday night (6 April) the council's executive agreed measures aimed at cutting down on the mess caused by careless smokers. The move will see additional council staff being given the authority to issue penalty tickets for litter dropping.
The council will be mounting a publicity campaign to make smokers aware that dropping their cigarette butts could land them with a hefty fine or even a court appearance.
Ticketing litter bug smokers is the latest in a range of initiatives aimed at keeping Cherwell clean that include litter blitzes, an effective street cleaning team, investment in street cleaning equipment. The Cherwell approach is to balance high performance street cleaning with education and enforcement. The approach resulted in Cherwell receiving "five stars" at the recent Clean Britain Awards, hosted by the British Cleaning Council.
Councillor George Reynolds, Cherwell's portfolio holder for health community and the environment, said: "Putting extra resources into catching litter louts has proved very effective. We've issued 82 fixed penalty notices and taken out five successful prosecutions. But smoking related litter is on the increase in some areas and it's time we targeted that to make sure that Cherwell remains a clean and attractive district."
In a separate move aimed a reducing the cost of chasing late payers, the executive also agreed to reduce the fixed penalty notice for litter dropping from £75 to £50 for those who pay within seven days.
