Level Crossing Closures

Published: 03 December 2020

Network Raid plans to close the level crossings at Yarnton Lane and Sandy Lane and replace them with footbridges. At Sandy Lane there will be separate ramp access for wheelchairs and bicycles, but at Yarnton Lane only a wheeling ramp at the side of the steps for bicycles. Closure of Sandy Lane is also included in the new Cherwell Local Plan. The reasons for the closure are safety considerations, along with the substantial increase planned in rail traffic along the line, which would result in unacceptably long waiting periods at the crossing. The planned housing developments in Yarnton and Begbroke will also add significantly to traffic along Sandy Lane. Kidlington Parish Council has decided on balance to oppose the proposal to close the Sandy Lane crossing, on the grounds that it will cause significant inconvenience and extra driving time for Yarnton and Begbroke residents visiting Kidlington centre, with a consequent likely loss of business for Kidlington traders, not to mention the inconvenience for Kidlington residents driving to Yarnton. Network Rail is holding a virtual drop-in for residents on 10 December: see this letter.
