Plans for Lyne Road Green

Local residents will be well aware of the unauthorised incursion onto Lyne Road Green last summer.  Kidlington Parish Council took steps to rectify the situation as quickly as possible and put concrete lego blocks in place as a short term measure to prevent further unauthorised access.

As part of its commitment to tackling Climate Change, the Council has been thinking about how the area could be more actively managed and we would like to involve local residents as much as possible to make the green a more attractive, biodiverse and, of course, secure setting.

The first step in this plan is to plant a line of trees along the roadside border of the green. We have been working with local environment specialists to help choose species which provide plenty of interest all year round with spring flowers and autumn colour. We plan to plant Crab Apple, Hornbeam, Lime, Maple, White Beam and Hawthorn this season.

We would also like to further improve the habitat for wildlife, especially for beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies. Wild Oxfordshire has provided a vision of how this might look: see the picture and the detailed plan of how to achieve it.

Plans for the future:

  • Base line survey to identify and record the plant species on the site. In order to do this we will have to selectively mow some areas and leave others to go wild for a bit.
  • Hedge laying – we hope to get local residents involved in learning how to lay hedges to encourage wildlife.
  • Bug Hotels and biodiversity projects – we would like to involve local residents in building bug hotels and help with ideas for growing herbs and edibles.
  • We are planting a row of trees on the Green in the last week of October 2021.

If you would like to comment on the plans or, better still, get involved with the projects, we would love to hear from you. Please come to our hedging day on the Green on Saturday 30 October 2021.
